Questions

What should a mileage log include? For each business trip: the date, where you started and where you went, the business purpose, and the miles, plus your total miles for the year. Odometer readings make the miles easy to check. IRS Publication 463 covers what records to keep for car expenses.

Which mileage rate do I use in 2026? The rate for the date of the trip: 72.5¢ a mile through June 30, 2026 and 76¢ a mile from July 1, for business driving.

Can I fill it in later from memory? IRS Publication 463 says a record made at or near the time has more value than a statement prepared later. It does not have to be the same day: a log kept weekly that accounts for the week's driving counts.

Is there an easier way than paper? AFGTracker's mileage log fills in the distance from the addresses and values each trip at the rate for its date.
